It may be difficult when you deal with acne on a daily basis to figure out how to treat acne. To treat acne you have quite a few different treatment options.  The options to treat acne can vary from person to person depending on the severity of your acne and skin tone. The many different ways to treat acne are:

Cleansing:  One myth associated with how to treat acne is that people develop an acne problem from lack of washing. Did you know that washing your face too much can cause irritation of whiteheads and blackheads? It can actually make them even more infected than before. It is important if you are to treat acne with cleansing to wash with a gentle cleanser such as Aveeno or Neutrogena.

Exfoliating: Exfoliating will remove layers of dead skin and helps to promote healthy skin. After you wash your face with a cleanser you can exfoliate with a face scrub a few times a week. It will help to get rid of dead skin cells that can clog pores.

Keep skin clear: Try to stay away from clogging your pores any further with make-up, lotions, and other facial products that have oil in them.

Medications: There are many different medications that can be used to treat acne. They include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide: this can be found in many over the counter medications and has been known to kill bacteria that make acne worse.  It helps to treat acne by preventing oil clogging ducts and helping to heal pimples. You should use it once a day after you wash your face before bed. Once you’ve been using it once a day for a week straight you should then switch to twice a day. If this does not help to treat acne within 4 to 6 weeks it is important to speak with your doctor.
  • Retin A: This medication to treat is available with your doctor’s prescription. It may cause skin to become irritated and peel. It is important to speak with your doctor about the various side effects before beginning this medication.
  • Antibiotic: There are various antibiotics that can be used to treat acne with a doctor’s prescription. It is important to follow all your doctors’ instructions when you use an antibiotic.
  • Accutane: This is only available with a doctor’s prescription. It is a very powerful way to treat acne. It is only to be used with those who suffer from severe scarring and acne that cannot be handled by other medications.

Hands off: It is important with acne not to pick or touch at it. The condition of acne will only worsen with frequent touching.

It is important with any method to treat acne that you speak with your doctor before starting a new regime. You may incorrectly use the wrong product only making it more difficult to diagnose and treat acne issues properly.  Your doctor may have a better method to treat acne than you have discovered on your own.
